Now a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor! From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining—an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is “[a] vivid frightscape” (The New York Times).
Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance’s sanity, as his paranormal gift known as “the shining” opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook—and his father’s legacy of alcoholism and violence—kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname “Doctor Sleep” by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone—who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining—the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan’s own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl’s soul and survival...

Very inspiring
Stephen King is a king. The king of writing. I loved the book. So inspiring. I read some reviews complaining about the multiple references to AA. Am not in AA, but geez did I appreciate those! Stephen King is able to grab the big picture and express it in an entertaining way. Masterful. To be in the inner of one character, and several. Yes I love his rich writing. His vocabulary. Which forces me in any case, to go to the dictionary. Uplifting, enriching, compassionate writing. Yet able to describe things as they are, good and evil. In fair amounts on both sides!

Slightly Above Average and Undercooked
The Movie had a better ending, let me start there. It’s Stephen King so you can expect good, engaging storytelling with the Book. But there is a sneaky lingering sense that he pulled his punches a bit. There is enough raw content in this book to make a masterpiece but he held his hand, maybe because of time? Maybe he ran out of ideas? Or maybe for ‘political’ reasons? Who knows? He could have really turned up the heat in this story with true horror instead of the few teasing tidbits that we got. What we have here is the shadow of a masterpiece that suffers from ‘neatness’, a fair bit of filler and underdeveloped ideas and tangents. I expect Part 2 (Shining Part 3?) and that this universe will be fleshed out. Until then, 2 stars for being only slightly above average, undercooked, and being outperformed by the movie with a lazy ending.

Not the closure I expected
I can’t believe Danny is gone! I understand his mom being gone but why him?! Very disappointed about that... I would like to see a part three where Danny possibly returns through Abra.....The shining is definitely the best.

One of Kings BEST
Aside from the gruesome deaths of the victims, this book is a non-stop thrill ride through the imagination of one of America’s best storytellers. Loved how Danny resolves his issues from childhood to adulthood with the help of those human angels that seem to pop out of nowhere when you need them. Not being predictable or inappropriate like so many other authors I will not name; King always delivers a spellbinding story told as only he can. Thx for the nightmares and the adrenaline rushes!

Dr Sleep
I gave Dr Sleep 5 stars (4-1/2 if I could have). Being a long time “constant reader” of King, I was happy it didn’t disappoint. I couldn’t put the book down. I truly enjoyed the character development and the unique, unexpected and sudden King style of story telling. Dr Sleep was a very worthwhile read and I recommend it even to the non-King readers (although first reading the 5 star “The Shining” is a prerequisite) Hal R

The perfect sequel.
One of my favorite Stephen King books and the perfect sequel to The Shining. It is extremely well written and impossible to put down once you get started. It’s one of those books you can read over and over again without growing tired of it. Stephen King killed it again and as with all of his books it was worth every dollar spent.

Loved It
The Shining as a story was something that I always knew about, but even though I’ve been reading Stephen King since childhood, I’d not actually read it until this year. I knew the movie, the story of the scary hotel in the mountains and the spooky stuff that happened there. But, on finally reading The Shining as a grown woman with a lot of trauma in my past, the thing that actually scared me about it was this man justifying and excusing his abusive behavior in more and more ridiculous ways. This struck me as so frighteningly real, so authentic a representation of abuse that I couldn’t help but love and hate the book all at the same time. Now that I’ve just finished Doctor Sleep, I’m again blown away by just how frightening the story is. Not because of the scary monsters, but because of the struggle that Doc, and eventually Abra, have to face with trying to jump off of the wheel that turns the cycle of abuse and addiction. It is always so amazing to me the way that SK hides these deeply real and relatable stories so perfectly inside the fantastical and terrifying stories of otherworldly monsters. I loved it. Thank you, Stephen.

Wonderful.
As always, this is a fantastic piece of literature from Stephen King. The story was very gripping as soon as the book started. The character development was absolutely amazing. I really felt for the Stone family and Dan as the book progressed. My father is an alcoholic so this book really resonated with me, and I feel like I was able to take away a lot from it.

I have always been wary of audiobooks because I'm very picky about the narrator. But let me say that Will Patton did this novel so much justice that I went out and bought the other Stephen King books narrated by him. The combination of Patton's voice and King's imagination led this novel to becoming one of my favorite. I very highly recommend this audiobook.

What happened to Stephen King? This book is so see through, boring, and rushed. I mean, who didn't see that ending coming!? Though I didn't expect it to be as anticlimactic as is was. Yawn... The characters are forgetful. I didn't really care who lived or died, I just wanted it to be over. And what's with all the Alchoholics Anonymous? It's throughout the entire book. He's a drunk, we get it. This book should've never happened...

Finding Dan Torrance
Years after the horror at the Overlook Hotel, we catch up to Dan Torrance in his adult life and career. Never too far from the shadows and echoes of the Overlook, Dan still deals with his unique abilities, colloquially called the shine. The shine in others varies in strength, and Dan gets glimpses of those folks frequently, for good or for not so good. Dan really puts the shine to use for good when he lands a job in a small town New Hampshire (recommended to him by Tony) at a hospice. Then he finally meets a person that has been calling to him, using the shine, for a long time. That person will change his life in a number of unexpected ways. Doctor Sleep is an excellent read.

I have read ALL of his books and was never disappointed...never, that is, until now. I tried to get into it, I really did, but failed! I got about a third if the way through and that was all I could take. SO BORING, YAWN, "Sleep" is a great word to have in the title, and so unlike SK usual thrillers!! Maybe I will try again after reading all of the positive reviews, after I read Mr. Mercedes? Really though, a sequal to The Shining, I don't think that is accurate. Two stars I gave is just because it is my favorite author of all time :( I will revise if I ever get through it and feel any different.

Dan Torrance versus The True Knot
I read The Shining when it was published and thought it was great. Now 30 (?) years later Doctor Sleep picks up the adult life of Danny-now Dan Torrance. This is a riveting sequel. I found it a bit slow in developing, but in the end well worth the wait. The book revisits many of the characters from The Shining, but also develops a whole new cast of interesting figures, led by a young girl named Abra Stone. If you like King you will like Doctor Sleep, written by one of America's great storytellers and the ultimate master of horror.

This book was honestly one of the best books I've read. Stephen King has the ability to submerge you into the story whether it be through small details or he lightest emotions that we all experience at one point or another. He can throw you from one scene to the next effortlessly. All the while you are gripped into some overwhelming paradigm along with the characters. This book has tons of creativity and is worth purchasing.

It All Comes Around
I still remember reading, The Shining, a book that I borrowed from my neighborhood library. I was in 7th grade and I was in my scary, thriller genre phase. I liked reading RL Stine, but I was especially fond of Stephen King's novels. The Shining and Misery, were and continue to be favorites. So, when I heard that there was going to be a sequel to The Shining, I had my doubts, but just reading the the first couple of pages, I knew that this was something special. I haven't enjoyed a scary book in such a long time, maybe because I'm in my 30s and nothing really scares me, unless it's a non-fiction book, and even some of it can be fictious. Reading this made me remember when, I was in 7th grade reading in a dark room with a small table lamp next to my bed, and then, not being able to go to sleep, because I was scared, but also because I really wanted to see how things 'turned out.' This book made me feel that way all over again, my favorite line and it applies to my experience, "it all comes around." Thank you Stephen King, for letting us into your scary mind, even though you have caused me to have some sleepless nights.

One of my favorite Stephen King books and the perfect sequel to The Shining. It is extremely well written and impossible to put down once you get started. Loved It
The Shining as a story was something that I always knew about, but even though I’ve been reading Stephen King since childhood, I’d not actually read it until this year.

Torn??

Doctor Sleep
Excellent writing by one of the worlds best authors. Stephen King is brilliant in this exciting and heart pounding sequel to The Shining. The characters are alive and exciting and you want to keep reading to see if they can overcome their obstacles and prevail. I recommend reading the first novel if you have not in awhile before venturing with this one and do not read this if you have only seen the movie staring Jack Nicolson for that film is a far fetch from the actual story.

Closure for Danny
Follow up on Danny after the horror of The Shinning was very satisfying for me. SK was spot on of all the AA things. The the wheel that Akra used was intriguing. I found this to be a all nighter Read. Well maybe all nighter and then some. Had an MVA and was on bed rest so it was just what the "Doctor" ordered !!

Wonderful, believable sequel to The Shining! Couldn't put it down!!!!
True Stephen King! The gory and wonderful details of being human, an alcoholic, and a person with a special gift were all over the place - in a good way. Loved it!!! The story keeps you engaged, anxious, and entranced. A very good read. Love the actual details of AA and the recovery program, too. Wonderful job, Stephen!!! Keep them coming!💚💚💚👏👏👏

Genre : Fiction & Literature ,Books ,Crime & Thrillers ,Horror

It here are very few books of S kings that I don’t love. Even if I don’t love them I sure do like them a lot. This is one that I’ll read again....and again.

Running with passion

Missed opportunity
I found Dr. Sleep simply insufferable. A follow up to The Shining which was a brilliant psychological/horror story to a super dumbed down story with preposterous villains that simply tries too hard to connect the dots to the past. Disappointing.

Loved It
The Shining as a story was something that I always knew about, but even though I’ve been reading Stephen King since childhood, I’d not actually read it until this year.

Everything you want in a S.King thriller!
Hands down one of the best books I’ve read! It’s not the sequel you would expect to the shining but it is COMPLETELY worth the read. It’ll have you at the edge of your seat from the first page until the last. I’m never going to be able to look at a RV the same again! Moral of this review, buy the book you seriously won’t regret it!

This book is about Danny Torrance (the little boy in The Shining). Must read!!
my opinions and i
Epic!

King must love AA meetings...

Meesh 76's review of Doctor Sleep
This book is a must read for any true Stephen King fan. I just finished Doctor Sleep and it was amazing. It's about Dan Torrance from the Overlook Hotel all grown up. I love how Stephen King finally gives us the Torrance family history. Dan is grown up & is trying to save Abra, his niece from this strange tribe who use the mist of children to live forever. They're a vampiric cult whom all follow the orders of Rose the Hat. At the end Danny must face his own personal demons as well as maintain his composure to save his niece, her family, and his friends. It's a must read!! The master is at it again!! I'm ready for Stephen King's next book Revival! 11/11/14.
